A travelling theatre group stopped in Prince George Wednesday to kick off its three-month tour of the province to celebrate B.C.'s 150th birthday.
The New Pathways to Gold Society and the Newman and Wright Theatre Company have joined to create a travelling road show called the Motherlode. The troupe of five actors will be visiting different communities over the summer to promote the province's history and help communities learn about their past.
"It's an opportunity to do a number of things and one of those is to tell a community story, but another is to involve local youth in teaching them how to tell their community story," said Thomas Wright, co-artistic director and managing producer of Newman and Wright Theatre Company.
The Motherlode tour is broken up into three parts. The first part runs from Saturday until June 7 and involves travelling to Barkerville, Wells, Ashcroft and Walhachin and doing workshops and performances there.
From June 12 to July 6, the group will be on the Canadian Pacific Spirit of 150 Rail Tour performing in towns along the line from Sparwood to Vancouver.
After the rail tour, they'll spend the last two months travelling to various communities from Prince George to Hope.
"We go into the town and do workshops for two days," Wright said. They could be with children, seniors or the community theatre group "and they develop a 15 minute segment .... about their community story and then we put that story into our show," he said. This way each show is unique to each community.
The troupe consists of five actors who attend the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria and got the idea to audition for the show from their classmates.
The cast and crew said they are excited about the show and eager start the tour. "We're ready for action," said Enrique Barragan who plays Paco, a Mexican mule packer.
When they aren't travelling, Newman and the Wright Theatre Company is based at Theatre Royal in Barkerville. Wright said they do three different shows a year, but this is the first time they've ever taken their show on the road.
"This is the first year that we've had two complete casts, one of which is on the road and one of which is in Barkerville," he said.
The Motherlode travelling road show will be stopping again in Prince George later this summer. Dates and times have not been finalized.
