CBC Radio3 will broadcast live from Meow Records on Friday and the show will include hot indie singer-songwriter Chad VanGaalen. Meow won the spotlight after fans of the show Searchlight voted the Prince George business the Best Record Store in Canada in a playoff-style series of online polls this spring. It took two months to whittle the list down from 47 stores to the April 18 finale crowning Meow as the cat's pajamas in the vinyl world. VanGaalen was one of the high-profile supporters of the Meow bid, having gotten familiar with the place during his visit to Prince George Folkfest two years ago. "It's all being schedule through CBC so I haven't talked to him yet, but apparently he's really excited," said owner Bryndis Ogmundson. Searchlight host Grant Lawrence said, We are going to put one of Canadas best songwriters into Canadas best record store and broadcast the performance live to the entire world. When we approached Chad VanGaalen to play Meow, he readily agreed, as he is actually one of the few musicians in Canada whos actually already been to the store - he shopped there after his performance at the Prince George Folk Festival. Joining VanGaalen will be local acts Hey Everyone (comprised of Robert Dunlop, Eva Prkachin, Corey Wintemute and Corbin Spensley) and Versus (comprised of Shae Morin, DJ Siab and Max Jones). They were selected by Ogmundson for the live national show. "It was a hard decision though, there is so much great stuff in town at the moment," she said. Meow Records is located downstairs on Brunswick Street and Third Avenue on the same block as Present Solutions (south of Northern Hardware). Space is limited so preference will be given to people wearing Meow Army T-shirts (on sale now at the store) and bring donations (not money) for the SPCA. Ogmundson suggested blankets, bleach, food, toys, etc. "It is going to be pretty awesome, and a really fun day down here. I want that plaque!," she said. There will be events all day long with the broadcast being held between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. You can hear it live on Searchlight by tuning into CBC Radio3, online at www.cbcradio3.com and on Sirius Satellite channel 94.
