BCSENIORS GAMESTERRY BURGESS
The B.C. Seniors Games won't happen in Prince George until September, but now is the time to start preparing for them, says the games co-ordinator for the top half of the province.
"It might seem early, but now is the time for seniors to choose their sport, hone their skills and prepare for the games, and in some cases, playoffs, to get there," said Dick Voneugen.
"Participants should be signing up in May since area qualifying tournaments are held in May and the Zone 9 playoffs in June," said Voneugen.
"By July 1, things are pretty well cast in stone as to who will represent the zone."
There are 29 events to choose from for seniors living in Zone 9, stretching from Mackenzie to Lac La Hache south and east to McBride. Voneugen estimates there will be more than 3,000 athletes 55 years and older competing in the province-wide games being held Sept. 10 to 13.
"This is a big event for our city and is expected to bring a couple of million dollars into the coffers through meals, accommodation, transportation, shopping and more," said Voneugen.
Prince George is the only B.C. community to hold the games for a second time, having been a tremendously successful games host in 2002.
New sports this year include dragon boat racing, mountain biking, equestrian and disc golf.
