Re: Baby newest resident at therapy centre (story, May 14). A new life is always a celebration and other new lives are starting with the addition of schooling to the existing programs. Studies have shown that low levels of literacy are implicated in violence, homelessness, poverty and higher levels of incarceration. It is true that while more than four in 10 Canadian workers are equipped with some form of post-secondary education -- the second-highest proportion in the world -- nearly as many adults lack the reading and writing skills needed to succeed in todays economy. A persons literacy level affects employment opportunities, income, health, a sustainable economy, the environment (e.g. the carbon tax) and even the ability to participate in the community. All of these factors exact a cost from the community and can be passed on to future generations This a good news story, not just for anyone who is working toward becoming more literate, but also for Prince George, British Columbia and our entire country. Good work, Baldy Hughes Therapeutic Community. -- Helen Domshy, community literacy co-ordinator Prince George
