CALGARY - It's cigars - or should that be bananas - all around following the birth of a Western Lowland gorilla at the Calgary Zoo.
The hairy little gorilla, which has not yet been named, came into the world around 3 a.m. Thursday. The mother, named Zuri, and her newborn are both doing fine, although staff are keeping a close watch on both for any potential health problems.
The zoo says the baby is important in the survival of the species, as the plight of both Western Lowland and Mountain gorillas in the wild continues to worsen due to disease, habitat loss and poaching.
The gorilla's birth comes as the Calgary Zoo continues to investigate the mysterious deaths of 40 out of 43 cownosed stingrays that started dying last weekend.
Tests are still being done to determine what killed them.
