The damage was done sometime Monday morning. Investigations are now underway by Quesnel RCMP and the BC Transmission Corporation.
The incident did not disrupt power to any customers, but it will cost a significant amount of maintenance resources.
"We are still investigating the cost of the damage, but we are working at repairs as quickly as possible," said Chris Rathbone, spokesman for the BCTC. "It is very import to keep all our equipment in full working order at all times, as best we can."
Although security fencing surrounded the substation, the vandals got in by breaking a gate lock. Rathbone said this incident could have been fatal had these vandals not been very lucky.
"It is very dangerous to be in there in the first place. If you aren't properly trained, you risk a very good chance of being seriously injured or killed. We have extensive security around our substations and it is there for a reason. All the infrastructure inside are related to the transmission of high voltage electricity."
BCTC is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction of the perpetrators. "There was no indication they were in there to steal anything," Rathbone said, but the impact of the wreckage is significant."
