LOS ANGELES - Russian heavyweight star Fedor Emelianenko will take on former UFC champion Tim Sylvia on July 19 in Anaheim, Calif., at a mixed martial arts card sponsored by Affliction, the clothing company has confirmed.
The show, to be held at the Honda Center, is dubbed "Affliction Banned." Both the UFC and rival EliteXC have reportedly banned Affliction gear from their events now that the clothing company is in the fight promotion business.
Other former UFC fighters on the Affliction card include former heavyweight champion Josh (The Baby-Faced Assassin) Barnett, Matt (The Law) Lindland, Renato (Babalu) Sobral, Pedro Rizzo and Mike Whitehead.
Emelianenko (27-1) was long considered the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet but he has only fought twice since his last Pride outing in December 2006. The 31-year-old remains one of the few elite fighters to campaign outside of the UFC.
Sylvia (24-4) is a two-time UFC champion who elected to leave the organization. The six-foot-eight 260-pounder is coming off a loss at UFC 81 in February to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the UFC interim heavyweight champion.
In other fights on the card, Barnett will take on Rizzo, Lindland will face Brazilian Fabio (Negao) Nascimento and Sobral will tackle Whitehead. Former IFL heavyweight champion (Big) Ben Rothwell is also on the card against an as-yet unidentified opponent.
The Affliction card will also be carried on pay-per-view.
