TURNER VALLEY, Alta. - An Alberta town is pondering the best way to bring in a ban on products made out plastic foam.
Turner Valley town council unanimously passed a motion last month to implement the ban on the foam - which is used to make drinking cups or takeout food containers - but they're still working out the details of how exactly it would be applied.
Coun. Garry Pollock says they originally envisioned the ban applying only to the food service industry, but now are also focusing on packaging and the foam's use in the construction industry.
He says while the ban wouldn't expressly forbid people from having the foam products, it would keep them from tossing it out into the town's waste removal system.
Pollock says the town originally set its sights on banning plastic bags, but quickly figured out the plastic foam is much harder to recycle and therefore a greater waste problem.
He says a draft version of the bylaw should be ready by June 17 for council to debate.
