College Heights Secondary School student Janine Reilander is the 2008 Youth of the Year.
Reilander displayed the combination of academic excellence, leadership and community commitment required to earn the title, Mayor Colin Kinsley said before presenting her with the award during Monday night's council meeting.
She's been on the principal's list for three years now and had the top grade-point average in her class last year. She's also been an outstanding volunteer, both at CHSS and in the community.
"In her nomination package, her list of volunteer endeavours was three pages long," Kinsley noted.
To name a few, Reilander's been involved in students' council, sports tournaments, coaching and officiating, the Salvation Army Christmas kettle campaign, the B.C. Lions Society Spirit Bear campaign, Royal Bank Cup, Terry Fox Run and Canadian Cancer Society Walk for Cancer.
"Whether it's academics, athletics, school or community, Janine's spirit comes forward as a bundle of energy, enthusiasm and good organization," Kinsley said. "No matter how hard the course load, no matter how much she has to do, she's always positive and smiling.
"Her future is bright and without a doubt she will be become one of Prince George's outstanding community leaders."
In addition to a certificate from Kinsley, Reilander will receive a $250 bursary from the Prince George Citizen.
