MASICH PLACE STADIUM
Jon Rathjen missed a year but didn't miss a beat. Rathjen, a throws specialist with the Prince George Track and Field Club, wasn't able to compete last season because of leg injuries. The local teenager made his comeback this past weekend in Kamloops, host city of the annual Centennial track and field meet. And, at the event, Rathjen was as dominant as ever. In the juvenile men's division, he powered to gold medals in discus, shot put and hammer throw. "It was nice to see him smiling again," said PGTFC president Tom Masich. The Centennial gathering was also a successful one for Alyx Treasure of the PGTFC. Treasure, an age-group national champion in high jump last season, set a Centennial meet record in high jump with a leap of 1.75-metres and tied a meet mark in triple jump with an effort of 10.55m. Treasure, who turns 16 this week, won gold medals in both disciplines, and also added a gold medal in long jump. "Icy winds kept Alyx from any personal-best marks on the weekend but they are due to come soon," Masich said. In total, 12 members of the local club attended the meet. And, those 12 athletes brought home a total of 35 medals -- 12 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze. Other medal winners in various events were: Liam Jamieson, Parker Jamieson, Kyrsten Franz, Sarah Frost, Emma Balazs, Nic Balazs, Nathan Ott, Nick Mclean, Kyle O'Meara and Brian Martinson. Martinson, 50, competed in the 35-and-over category and ran to gold in an 800m race. In the 1,500m distance, he finished one step behind the winner, a 40-year-old. -- The north central zone high school championship meet will be held May 23-24 at Masich Place Stadium. The annual Spruce Capital Invitational is planned for June 14-15.
