CEDARS CHRISTIAN SCHOOLHUDSON HOPEEXPLORATION PLACECANADIAN
The names of the regional heritage fair winners were announced Monday, confirming the local students who will represent the city at the upcoming provincial and national events. "Definitely it was the biggest year in quite some time, we had 72 projects and 85 kids involved," said co-organizer Amanda Tisseur from The Exploration Place, one of the main sponsors of the event. "We had a group of students from Beaverly elementary do a project on Canada's national horse breed called The Canadian and they actually brought a real horse, right outside the doors, it was the coolest thing." Even the venue this year dripped with local legacy. The site was the Blackburn Community Hall, which sits on the campus of the historic Blackburn House a few minutes east of downtown. The Exploration Place could no longer hold all the student projects signed up for the annual history showcase, so committee member Rob Larson suggested the Blackburn location. "It was a wonderful idea," said Tisseur. "The hall was big enough for the event, and it was filled right up with projects, it was close enough for people to attend, and the historic house was the perfect touch." Each project has to have some aspect of Canadian heritage as its theme. Students were required to do research, conduct interviews and present their work with a speech. Many, who are all in Grade 5, 6 or 7, wore costumes and used props. Tisseur noticed a couple of recurring themes this year among the presentations and reports the students produced. The accomplishments of the students' grandparents were frequently the subject of the displays, as was family history projects. "The calibre was really great," she said. "You could tell many of the students had invested quite a lot of time, and really committed themselves to doing a good job."
