NEW YORK - Interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former title-holder Frank Mir will serve as coaches on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show, Spike TV announced Monday.
The series, to premiere Sept. 17, will feature lightweights (155-pounders) and light-heavyweights (205-pounders) with Nogueira and Mir to meet in a mixed martial arts card scheduled for pay-per-view at a later date.
Nogueira (31-4-1) rallied to submit Tim Sylvia and win the interim heavyweight belt at UFC 81 in February. The UFC had hoped the 31-year-old Brazilian could take on champion Randy (The Natural) Couture to decide the title outright but Couture remains in a contract deadlock with the organization.
Mir, 28, is coming off a win over former pro wrestler Brock Lesnar at UFC 81. The Las Vegas native defeated Sylvia at UFC 48 in June 2004 to win the heavyweight title. But he was stripped of the belt after being unable to defend it following a serious motorcycle accident.
He returned to fighting in February 2006.
The eighth season of "The Ultimate Fighter" goes into production in late May. The rest of the cast will be announced in early September.
