WASHINGTON - A U.S. Energy Department report says wind turbines could be producing a fifth of America's electricity within two decades.
The report envisages more than 75,000 new wind turbines, many of them larger than those currently in use. It also foresees expansion of transmission systems to move power from high-wind areas to other parts of the country. Wind energy currently accounts for only about one per cent of U.S. electrical power.
However, the report says that could be expanded to 20 per cent, or 300,000 megawatts, by 2030.
That would put it on par with nuclear energy, which now accounts for about 20 per cent of the U.S. total.
