RICHMOND, B.C. - A Metro Vancouver fire department is leading the way when it comes to keeping emergency crews, fire inspectors and the community safe from carbon monoxide poisoning.

All fire captains and fire inspectors with Richmond Fire-Rescue now wear carbon monoxide detectors on their uniforms. The detectors sound an alarm when carbon monoxide levels of more than 25 parts per million are detected and the device also gives a reading of the exact level of the lethal gas.

As levels of carbon monoxide increase, the danger of serious health implications or death also increases.

Stuart Corrigal, Richmond deputy chief of operations, says there has been considerable interest in the first-of-its-kind program from other fire departments hoping to develop similar safety measures.

The initiative comes just weeks after two carpet cleaners died after being overcome by carbon monoxide when their van was left running in the garage of a Richmond townhouse where they were working.
