The annual Elks May Day Parade is a special one this year. The May 17 procession not only marks the 80th birthday of the spring event, but will salute more than 160 marching army cadets, present and past, celebrating 50 years of the Rocky Mountain Rangers corps presence in Prince George. Any individuals, groups or businesses wishing to participate in the parade can call Angie Fretter at 564-1952 or Howard Lloyd at 964-0582. There is no entry fee and no deadline to participate. The parade of commercial, service groups and children's floats assembles at the Coliseum between 8:30 and 11 a.m. This year's parade begins at 11 a.m. at the Coliseum, travels down Seventh Avenue and through the Civic Centre Plaza to Ninth Avenue and north along Victoria Street. At Third Avenue the parade turns right to George Street and heads to city hall. Festivities at city hall include May Day greetings by the Elks and the annual Royal Purple crowing of the 51st annual May Queen from among candidates representing elementary schools. The names of the winning queen and two princesses are drawn from a hat.
