The Canadian Powerlifting Organization championships didn't unfold as Tony Tomra envisioned. He did, however, still set a new world record in the bench press. Tomra, a 45-year-old local resident, was in Toronto on the weekend for the championships. In the bench press, he pushed 247.5 kilograms, a new world mark in the 100kg weight class. Heading into the competition, Tomra had also been aiming for world records in the squat and three-lift category, the latter of which would also take into account his result in deadlift. But, he fell short on those counts. "I didn't have the weekend that I hoped that I would have," Tomra said. "After making weight on Saturday, I kind of messed up re-hydrating and ended up with electrolyte problems and things didn't work out so good for me." Tomra managed a squat of 310kg and a deadlift of 240kg. His goal in the squat had been 352.5kg and he was shooting for 260kg in the deadlift. Tomra wanted a three-lift total of 855kg but settled for a total of 797.5kg. "The whole meet didn't go as planned but that's the way these things sometimes go," he said. "I did end up with one world record out of it."
