Re: Crown balks at inquest testimony (story, May 8).
If there ever needed to be a reason to slam the justice system, Stan Lowe provided it.
He blatantly suggests the justice system should be held above reproach. He is reacting to the fact that the Peter Lee inquest has asked to have Crown lawyers give testimony as to why they handled previous dealings with Mr. Lee the way they did. He says Crown lawyers could become more conservative in their decisions if they know they may be called to testify about them.
What is wrong with that? They should be held accountable for making any decisions and definitely bad decisions. Look at the state of our justice and corrections systems today. Why do we have convicted killers, sex offenders and pedophiles relaxing in the “Club Feds” of our penal system that can just walk away and then the justice system tells the public to beware of these people?
There cannot be a single person in the country who thinks this is OK unless they are the criminal and our justice system.
What about the continuous media coverage on the crime of this country and all we hear from the legal system is, “These people are known to the police” over and over again. How many times do we, the public, have to put up with this nonsense? Where is our sense of security? It certainly is not in the performance of the justice system.
And Mr. Lowe thinks the justice system should not be held accountable to the public for making the choices that led to these problems? I say definitely. It is time the public lets our politicians and the country in general know that we are tired of the inept results coming from the justice department and demand that can live in a society that is protected against crime. The honest people of Canada deserve it.
