Campers are forewarned to think twice about their destination of choice on the Victoria Day weekend. Otherwise, they might encounter snow. As of this week, Bear Lake, Carp Lake and Whiskers Point Provincial Park north of town appeared doubtful, according to Don Stephens, a permittee at Quartz Contracting, who plans to check these sites next week. "The ones out west -- Beaumont, Paarens and Sowchea -- they didn't get the snowfall, so will be up and running by the long weekend," Stephens said. Eastwards, Stephens "got stuck" in snow on the road Wednesday at Purden Lake Provincial Park, which still had ice. He expects, however, to be able to open at least some of the camp site by the long weekend. "That would be crazy if there was still ice on the lake on the long weekend," Stephens said. "At Purden, usually it's off by April-something or March-something. I'll confirm it on the parks website by next week, but I'm pretty sure Purden will be open." Closer to town, he said West Lake is open for those wanting to launch boats. "The ice is just gone off, like yesterday, which is three weeks behind from what it normally is," he said of West Lake. For more information, contact Stephens at 964-3489 or check the B.C. Parks Web site at www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks.
