WE HAVE A PIC IN THE "NEWS" E-MAIL

If you are the mom of a Shady Valley elementary student, please read no further or you'll spoil your surprise.
The entire school got a visit this week from glass artist Wendy Young, who taught each student how to use heat glass and shape it into pendants embossed with a letter M for mother. On Sunday morning, they will be proudly presenting their creation to their moms.
Shady Valley teacher Mary Duck saw Young demonstrating her art at a Minerva Foundation function and it struck her that when artists visit schools it is usually to show kids how to draw or paint.
"It struck me that here was another avenue and it looked easy enough that the children could do it even though they were inexperienced with this sort of thing," Duck said. "Never in a million years did I think she would agree to come."
"I am so in favour of reaching kids with art," said Young. "They were adorable when they were doing it, so excited. This was the first classroom presentation of my artwork, so I was a little concerned at first but it went like clockwork.
"I am a member of the Community Arts Council and I will be looking into their Artists In The Schools program for next year."
The youngest students were given simple tasks in the glass melting and melding process, and the older ones got to work with a few more of the tools, but all had a lot of hands-on activity.
"The bell rang for lunchtime and they didn't want to leave," Young said.
Young's original art can be found for sale at Studio 2880's art boutique, at the Two Rivers Art Gallery gift shop and at Exploration Place.
