COLES WEB
On Saturday, five students, four projects and two chaperones will leave for Ottawa to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair. The projects and students were chosen from the 128 projects and 178 students by judges at the Central Interior Science Fair back in March.
The science fair has had 32 years of success due to many factors: the students who participate and bring more thoughtful projects each year; the parents and teachers who support these students; the many volunteers the day of the fair, including judges, students from the UNBC math, chemistry, and physics clubs and D.P. Todd leadership program who help entertain the young scientists during the day; UNBC for donating the site and much of the food, coffee, tea, and water needed for the 70 judges and seven (only seven) committee members; and the businesses in the community for donating door prizes and the much-needed funding in order to make the science fair the success it has been all these years.
The committee is always looking for more members and is seeking a long-term corporate donor. Many of our more generous donors have come from the forest sector and are finding themselves struggling. We have appreciated their support for many years and their efforts to continue to support us, but if there are others who wish to become a part of this continuing success in encouraging student interest in science, we would live to hear from them.

Thank you on behalf of the committee to all who have been part of the past 32 Central Interior Science Fairs. The 33rd is set for March 7, 2009, so students, start thinking science projects.

...to the organizers and the kids who participate. Science fairs have come a long way since I went to school and kids today are so LUCKY to have these events to take part in. The sciences are an extremely powerful tool--they can enrich society in more and more amazing ways or they can also be used in some pretty bad ways, too. These fairs teach kids how to use the sciences for the Good of society and to put these powerful tools in perspective. The best part is, kids have a blast doing it, so the lessons are better remembered. Great stuff!!!

I can't wait to see my grandkid taking part in a science fair. Flip a quarter to see who has more fun :)
