SALMON RIVERHART HIGHWAY
The owners of Rockin's River Resort continued to contend Wednesday with flooding brought on by a fast-flowing Salmon River and they point their fingers at a log jam, which emerged during a similar event last spring, as a big cause of the problem. Not only has the jam remained in place but is now growing as more wood from upstream gathers at the spot and it's effectively shifted the river's flow and directing the water onto the resort property, located a short distance away from the Salmon River Bridge. "At this point you can't go into the river, but getting rid of the log jam would definitely be the way to go and to do some bank protection," said Horst Schulz, who co-owns the resort with Robyn Stoy. "But it depends on what the powers-that-be have to say because it's a high-cost proposition." However, Stoy said a neighbour who makes a living deflecting water away from pipelines is worried the river has shifted to the point where it could undermine Salmon Valley Road and possibly the Hart Highway. "He said they need to do something about it because next year the river is going to move further over again and not only is it going to threaten my property but it's going to threaten the infrastructure of the road system," Stoy said. Much of the resort's property has been submerged since Monday morning, when a Ministry of Forests crew came in to fill and place sandbags around the resort's main building.
