After discovering that the cemetery is a popular spot on Mother's Day, city staff will be on hand Sunday to guide visitors to the gravesites of loved ones and get the word out on services available and future plans for the area.
The move comes a year after an information session was held last year for the newly-opened mausoleum.
"I found out that Mother's Day is a really busy day," said Sandra Hewitson, administrative co-ordinator in the city's development services department. "And I found there were a lot of people who were looking for gravesites."
This year, city staff will come armed with maps and the book listing the locations of all people interred at the cemetery.
Information will also be available on the many options the cemetery offers for interment, from standard burial to columbaria, plans for an ossuary and scattering garden as well as a green-friendly burial area at the end closest to Cowart Road.
"It's for people who want to be buried in an environmentally sensitive way," Hewitson said. "The plots are a little bit bigger than average, the person is buried in a biodegradable shroud or coffin without being embalmed, and they have the option of a tree being planted at the site."
The plots would remain in place in perpetuity, Hewitson said.
"In Prince George, we're fortunate in that we have a really big area that can still be developed," she said. "We have enough to last us many, many years."
City staff will be at the cemetery from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I agree with, and commend, the efforts made to assist cemetery visitors on Mother's Day, but I don't think it's overly appropriate to be handing out "advertising" about the site's features and options at the same time. It may be valuable information but the timing of is just insensitive and unnecessary.

It's Mother's Day, not Marketer's Day.

City Hall to help cemetery visitors on Mother's Day
written by yeahrite , May 10, 2008 (07:06:52 AM)
I, personally, think it is a generous and considerate offer for city staff to direct visitors to grave sites on Mother's Day.
Many of the visitors will be elderly and the changes made on the roadways in the cemetery can make it difficult to determine locations. There will also be newcomers.
The help will surely be appreciated.
As to pointing out destinations of future sites, good idea. Death is a certainty, and I believe it would be helpful if those left to bury you would not be burdened with a decision to have to place you far removed from former loved ones who have passed on. I paid for my site going on 2 decades ago, and do not regret it for one second. I shall be buried in a site I chose, next to those I loved, whether they predeceased me or will follow. What is so wrong in making that decision in advance?? Actually, it is a bit comforting to know exactly where my last resting place will be.
Right where I want, my choice. Paid in full, in advance. Saved my family a tidy sum of money also, in all probability. Costs for Gravesites must be on the rise also???
So fly at it, city staff. Help those who would appreciate your assistance. Good plan!
I am sure many will "Thank You" for this generous contribution of your time
