Does your family have a plan in place in case of an earthquake or flood? Chances are you don't, according to Public Safety Canada, which says only one-third of Canadians have prepared a family emergency plan. It might be something to consider this week during Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs until Saturday. In the event of a natural disaster, Public Safety Canada suggests families should be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours while emergency workers focus on people in urgent need. This can be accomplished by way of an emergency kit containing water, food and other necessities. Miworth residents and riverside dwellers in Prince George are well acquainted with the year-round threat posed by Mother Nature. Last summer, several Miworth homes were relocated due to eroded banks caused by high water levels on the Nechako River. Then during the winter, numerous houses and businesses in Prince George suffered extensive damage the Nechako ice jam. For more information about emergency plans, check www.getprepared.ca.
