WHL BANTAM DRAFT
The Prince George Cougars have selected1993-born defenceman Jesse Forsberg with their first choice in today's Western Hockey League bantam draft.
Forsberg is a six-foot, 175-pounder from Waldheim, Sask., who played last season with the Warman Wildcats at the bantam AA level. The Cougars selected 11th overall as a result of two trades -- one that sent their first pick this year and defenceman Stefan Elliott to Saskatoon for Devin Setoguchi, and another that saw Evan Fuller and Ty Wishart moved to Moose Jaw along with a third-round choice for Brad Riege, Justin Maylan and the Warriors' first-round selection.
Forsberg was a key player for Warman as the Wildcats advanced to the Western Canadian bantam championship. Some scouting lists had Forsberg as a top-six prospect for the draft.
With the first overall choice, the Red Deer Rebels took Burnaby Winter Club centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Ty Rattie, a left-winger from Airdrie, Alta., went second overall to Portland, while Saskatoon used the former Prince George choice to secure defenceman Duncan Siemens of Sherwood Park, Alta.
In the second round, the Cougars chose Edmonton right-winger Caleb Belter at 25th overall. The Cougars did not have a pick in the third round, then took Lethbridge defenceman Shane Pilling in the fourth round, 69th overall.
