Annual elections by the College of New Caledonia board of directors produced no changes in top executive members. Bruce Sutherland was re-elected board chair during Friday's meeting, as were Ray Gerow and Peter Baird as vice-chairs of CNC Prince George and CNC regional campuses, respectively. Sutherland said some of the decisions made recently to balance the 2008-2009 operating budget, which is mandatory requirement of the province, have been very difficult -- especially the suspending of college programs for adults with disabilities, forestry and natural resources. "For some of those programs caught up in a lack of funding, the executive and the board together will leave no stone unturned to find other sources of funding to bring them back," Sutherland said. Looking forward, Sutherland said the good news is that the college is growing, especially in the areas of health and trades programs. "In light of the effects of the pine beetle devastation, we need to be aware of what's happening throughout our college region and in our new northern economy to calculate the needs and demands in areas like mining, land use and biomass energy." "As a board, we serve as a volunteer group of a community college that serves a lot of communities. We're all committed to continued growth and continued progress throughout CNC's vast area. We look forward to moving ahead over the next year," Sutherland said. Sutherland, president of Wolftek Industries, was elected as a director and vice-chair in 2006, and as chair in 2007 when he replaced Art Robin.
