A proposal to build two seniors-friendly apartment buildings at 4397 Austin Rd. won city council's approval Monday night following a presentation from the developer. Trenton McLaren of Peace Valley Enterprises had originally proposed to build two single-storey apartment buildings holding eight units each, but by the time he went to council, he had decided to reduce the number to six units each to provide more room on the 0.4-ha. property. "Upon talking to seniors, they said there was a strong need for affordable, safe housing that is at the walk-in level, meaning no seven (steps) up or seven (steps) down dwellings," he said. "So I decided to build these bungalow units." He said they would all be wheelchair accessible with door openings at least three feet wide and open floor plans. There is a bus stop in front of the property, located near the corner of Austin and Kelly roads and a handyDart stop at the nearby grocery store, he added. A rezoning application for the proposal was unanimously passed through third reading.
