The Cariboo Cougars, the provincial champion major midget hockey team from this region, has forced a third-and-deciding game in the Pacific regional final.
That game goes Sunday afternoon in Calgary, with the winner advancing to the Telus Cup national championship in Arnprior, Ont., later this month.
After losing 6-3 on Friday to the Calgary Buffaloes, the Cougars showed their resolve by winning in triple-overtime on a goal by Kalen Spoletini.
Top forward Brett Connolly, who scored a beautiful goal earlier in the game, wasn't around for the overtime periods, ejected with a checking-from-behind major. It wasn't immediately known if he would be suspended for Sunday's game.
The Cariboo Cougars did not lose a game in capturing the club's first B.C. championship, capping the run with a sweep of the Kelowna-based Okanagan Rockets.
See Monday's Citizen sports section for details on the pivotal final game.
