Canada needs to take a stand on Tibet Print E-mail

It is devastating to hear of the plight of Tibetans as Beijing cracks down on their protests.

It is reminiscent of the brutal regime in Burma. March 10 was the anniversary of the Tibet National Uprising of 1959. Thousands fled from Tibet at the time of the “cultural revolution." Many of those left behind were imprisoned and tortured for many years. Thousands died trying to escape or from starvation or brutality.

One person I met escaped with a group of 300. Only 13 of them survived by drinking from a trickle of water in a cave, and the last thing they ate was their shoe leather. This person has dedicated his life to relieving poverty among his fellow Tibetans and preserving their culture. The Government of China has committed cultural genocide on the people of Tibet. They can go to jail for having a photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Many monasteries have been destroyed and thousands of nuns and monks have been apprehended, tortured and abused.

Canada must take a stand, forego commercial interests if necessary, and politically support the people of Tibet in their efforts to maintain their peaceful traditions and culture. Just because Tibet has no oil is no reason to ignore their plight. Up to this time, Tibetans have followed a path of non-violence and should be rewarded for this. Powerful countries don't want to jeopardize their trade with China, but the people of Tibet deserve better from us and the world.

Typical left-wing nut. Every chance to beg for western intervention is used with the caveat;...just because they have no oil, is no reason not to help...Hmm alot of oil in Kosovo. What is it with the left-wing fringe? Everytime there is an issue which demands foreign intervention, the left tries to guilt the "west" (americans) into sending troops. But once they go anwhere, oh the hue and cry of imperialist dogs can be heard.
Just a side note. This entire oil theory is nuts. If Bush is controlled by oil interests, wouldn't lack of supply drive up prices? There will always be plenty of oil within the system to fuel america...it is the price which goes up. Not the availabilty tha is getting scarce.( I don't see any 70's style lineups anywhere?)
I thought it was the Left-wing idol Hugo Chavez who was practicing diplomacy from the oilwell. You know china's new best friend.

Wow, alexvega sure knows how to spew vitriol about every thing and everybody. Too bad he never has anything intelligent to offer to counter his criticism of the world and those who choose to speak out about the injustices around us--be they in municipal government or half way around the world.

"Typical left wing nut". "That TWIT Knox". "Dork". Funny, he claims to know a thing or two about libel and suggests he only attacks the opinions, not the writer...yet the quotes suggest otherwise.

Alexvega, perhaps you should subscribe to the theory that its better to be silent and merely be presumed pompous and self-righteous...then to open your mouth and prove it. Maybe you should return to the Falkland Islands or wherever it was you honed your British empirical attitude and opinions. Clearly a democracy like Canada, where people generally try to respect other people's views regardless of which side of the spectrum they may fall on, is not to your ultra right-wing tastes.

I notice you couldn't answer the question about "what was so inaccurate" about the wall street piece penned by RV. I imagine that's the case with a lot of your twisted prose: throw out a few 4-syllable words and some current media buzz phrases and hope like hell people think you're truly far more intelligent than the rest of us.

Well, he has succeeded in his mandate and that is to get a strong debate going, problem is the debate always gets turned back towards him. So in the future I think the best solution is to stay on topic and maybe just ignore this idiots rants. He clearly just tries to bait a lot of you here and you are falling for it.

Tombstone your obsession with me is leaning towards stalking. What is libelous about callin' someone a dork? Or a twit?
As for fueling the debate anybody can cut and post from some other source and claim themselves to be all knowledgable. I realize that is the blogging way, but I prefer not to plagerize my original thoughts.
It is the Walter Mitty in all of you. If you wanted credibility, why are you anonymous? I have to laugh how you all have to click on the popularity button to make yourselves feel important. Don't tell me you check back all the time to see where the totals are?
C'mon I read a few weeks ago how you all were pissin' and moanin' that they should be log-on only. I bet you guys would love a system that allowed us to see just how many posts you have made. Isn't that what is important on most blog sites? Isn't credibilty measured by how many posts you have made? And you have silly little terms like"drive-by" and "troll".
I made my initial critisism of an editorial not to "tombstone". He decided to attempt the tried and true sanctamonious response generally uttered by those who have had their little playpen upset.
The only problem is the blogs on this site were being utilized as a sophmorish greeting service. Arn't there chatrooms for those of you (tombstone...groovie-girl)who insist on having running conversations with each other.
As for Tibet it is simply the cause celeb of the koom-bye-ya crowd. What makes their plight any more urgent than just about the entire population of Africa? Oh yeah that ever so quaint man the Dalai-lama.

See: A mile wide and an inch thick, that is what the Free-Tibet support is like.
The mayor even decided not to cancel his holiday plans for China. Nary a whimper. In fact, even when you factor in my posts, such a bedrock liberal cause-celeb has fallen on indifferent ears.
I wonder what sells more to the left-wing fringe? Free Tibet merchandise or Che Guervera junk? Ironic.

not to stand on toes but i seen a sign for the tibetins (hope i spelled that right) that clearly stated.. Free Tibet, leave my country alone, we want to be free... could be me but if you leave a country to live elsewhere is that not now called your homeland and the country you live in now called your country once citizenship is granted? and the person holding that picket looked in good health now since coming to canada and is living free, so his sign is meant as a proxy for those still in tibet i am assuming

And i am all for the PRC stepping down as an ironfist ruler but i am curious as to what ends the picketing here can do?
