WINNIPEG - Two Winnipeg police officers, including the stepson of Winnipeg's former police chief, have been charged with perjury and temporarily taken off the job.
The charges relate to a year-long internal investigation into the execution of a search warrant at a hotel and the officers' subsequent testimony at a February 2006 court hearing, Winnipeg police said in a release Tuesday.
Const. Jess John Zebrun, 30, and Const. Peter John O'Kane, 37, are facing charges of perjury and unlawfully being in a dwelling house.
Two other constables, James Peter Sushnyk, 26, and Michael Thomas Rodewald, 28, are also facing charges of unlawfully being in a dwelling house.
Zebrun is the stepson of Jack Ewatski, who announced his retirement last January after nine years as Winnipeg's police chief. Ewatski also served as president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police until last September.
Winnipeg police say they are reviewing the status of each constable's employment.
"While their status is under review, they're on administrative leave," said Const. Jacqueline Chaput.
She said police cannot get into details about the case because it's before the courts.
"Our professional standards unit began the investigation in November of 2006, so it's been more than a year that they've been investigating the matter," Chaput said.
The provincial justice department then gave the file to an independent Crown prosecutor who recommended charges.
