The 2024 UNBC Timberwolves have announced the commitment of left back Jacob Wedel of Chilliwack.
Wedel, a soon-to-be graduate of Sardis Secondary, paid a visit to UNBC in February and reported being immediately impressed by the facilities, the calibre of play, and his future teammates.
“As soon as I came here, I just felt super welcome. It’s a good environment,” reflected Wedel who spent last season winning the provincial and national titles with Burnaby FC and head coach Todd May.
“That experience provided the best memories, teammates and staff I could have asked for," he said in a press release. "They are truly like family to me.”
Wedel’s greatest strength on the pitch is his defensive ability, something that head coach Steve Simonson said he noticed early during the recruitment process.
“I sense a grittiness in him. He is willing to face any challenge," he said. "During his visit, he came in, and didn’t take a backseat to anyone. He was assertive, threw himself at everything. He fits our style. There’s a really good player there. He knows how to use his size and his skills to his advantage. His character is going to help maximize his potential.”
Having the left-footed Wedel commit to the UNBC Timberwolves is a big coup for the program as “he provides added depth and a different look to an important position of need for us,” added Simonson.
Wedel plans to study for a Bachelor of Science at UNBC, and would like to play soccer professionally before pursuing a career as a sports psychologist.
He has also taken an active interest in coaching in the past two years.
